Away From The Numbers (AFTN) started life as a printed football fanzine in Scotland in 1989, growing to be a footballing presence on both sides of the Atlantic. From those early days churning out a couple of hundred photocopied issues in a bedroom in Fife, AFTN has grown to become two websites, two blogs and a podcast covering the game in both Scotland and Canada.
Our podcast, There's Still Time, focuses on the game in Canada, primarily covering Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and soccer in MLS. We have chat, roundtables, interviews and fun segments you don't hear elsewhere in what can be a somewhat bland and repetitive coverage of the game here.
Coming out of that gamechanging UK fanzine scene of the 80s and 90s shapes what AFTN is all about. We want to bring you all the latest news and interviews, along with comment and opinion on what is happening in the football world, and a look back at our teams’ rich histories. But we also want to have a laugh at the game and those who are part of it. That means humour, nonsense, lighthearted pieces.
With over 100 episodes in the can and a firm listenership well into the four figures, AFTN is one of the leading voices in covering soccer in Canada. But we want to take it to the next level.
To date we have never run adverts or had sponsors on the podcast or the site and don't make any money out of AFTN. We have our hosting and running costs all paid out of our editor's own pocket. This doesn't come cheap.
We want to raise some money to cover these costs, pay expenses for the hosts travel to training and games to get the content and to update our recording equipment to enable better sound quality, particularly with the roundtables.
If you enjoy our show or just enjoy helping such podcasts, then we'd love to have you as a regular patron.
We're working on some gifts and rewards right now too, but this is not a prime focus of our crowdfunding campaign.
New Equipment, hosting and expenses
This figure would allow us to buy some new equipment and meet the hosting costs for both the AFTN podcast and website, and allow us to pay travel expenses to the team for grabbing content for a year.
