We're here on Podbean Patron because we make a weekly podcast about the signs and stories from just around the corner in Memphis, Tennessee. We hope you'll help support our efforts by supporting us and getting behind-the-scenes extras, early episode releases, merch, and other goodies.
Memphis Type History 101
The Memphis Type photography project began in 2010 with Jeremy Greene. His photos documenting the often-overlooked parts of Memphis intrigued Rebecca Phillips. Rebecca painted the typography and signs from Jeremy’s photos for the Memphis Type Illustrated and Memphis Type Minis series. Painted layer by layer, each of these one-of-a-kind paintings has an “illustrated” look, like the postcards and ads of yesteryear.
The desire to capture the history of Memphis grew from photos and canvas to the written word when Caitlin Horton joined the team to write Memphis Type History: Signs and Stories from Just Around the Corner. The book features Rebecca's paintings and the history, rumor, and lore behind them.
While working on the book, Rebecca and Caitlin created a blog to document the signs and stories that were of interest but outside the scope of the book. After a few big life changes, we realized that a podcast would be a much better way to collaborate and keep the project going.
Rebecca's voice is coming to you weekly from Memphis, Tennessee, and Caitlin's musings are traveling all the way to your earbuds from Shanghai, China. • Therefore, we can do more research and interviewing,which means we release more in-depth shows.
• We can massively uplevel the production level of the podcast. We're talking on-site sound bites, multiple interviewees each show... the works.
• It's hard to even imagine what else would be possible at this point, but we trust it will become clerarer when we get here!
