Sonic portraits of Australian artists

Sonic portraits of Australian artists

Nat Grant is a composer and sound artist interested in the experience of memory, in oral histories, and the ability of art to share stories and connect people.

‘Prima Donna’ is an ongoing a series of sonic portraits of Australian artists, with a focus on women who were trailblazers: first in their field. Nat captures interviews with older artists: women who paved the way for artists like herself. The portraits comprise sections of interview recordings collaged with Nat’s original compositions: telling these artists’ stories, in their own words. They are both documentary and artwork.

The title of the podcast is significant: reclaiming a term (Prima Donna) that once meant “leading lady” and has been co-opted to silence women who are confident in themselves and their abilities.

This project bridges the gap between oral history and artwork. Existing oral history collections are incredible resources but not widely publicised, often kept in library storage and not featuring prominently in library catalogues.

Nat conducts research around each subject to get a clear picture of their backgrounds, careers, and achievements. Once she has interviewed each artist she pulls the recordings apart and begin the process of digital collage and assemblage with the source recordings, and the composition of new music alongside this.

The ongoing portrait series is free to access. Any donations here will help contribute to the costs associated with travel, research, and compiling the podcast episodes (about 15 hours of work per portrait).

Ongoing production costs

$500 per month

Each podcast episode takes around 15 hours to complete including research, interview time, editing, and production. This amount would cover some of this, as well as the ongoing site maintenance and hosting fees.

Travel costs

$1,000 per month

All the featured artists so far have been from Victoria. This amount would allow Nat to travel interstate to interview other artists from around Australia.
